History of the New Year’s celebration

Surely all of us know New Year’s Day, but not everyone knows where it comes from and how it was invented which is one of things you should know about New Year 2021’s celebration. This article will help make it clearer to you about its origin.

Though the New Year holiday is not common to all countries around the world, it is still the most important new Year celebration in terms of business and commerce.  New Year’s Day has been held for a long time and has changed over the centuries according to the evolutionary history of mankind. It dates back to ancient times and exists with the flow of civilization.

Let’s come to all the things you should know about New Year 2021’s celebration from Teeshirt21.

1. How the New Year celebration was invented

The Roman Empire was the first country to choose the first day of January as the New Year’s day in the Julian calendar system proposed by Emperor Julius Caesar. Before that day, March 25th (spring equinox-vernal equinox) was chosen as the first day of the year. The majority of Christian countries in Europe accepted that New Year’s Day from the medieval times between 1,100 and 1,400 BC. This day was not a harvest time or any special occasion, but the day when the elected Elders began taking on new assignments in the Roman Empire’s Senate.

Thus, during the Roman Empire, the first day of the year is counted back three months and 25th March is considered the first day of the year. Later each Roman Emperor who reigned often gave another name to the month, for example, September used to be called Germanicus, Antonius, and Tacitus, while November used to be called Domitianus, Faustinus, and Romanus.

After realizing the inconvenience of those names, Emperor Julius Caesar set up a new calendar. This one was the invention of the Greek astronomer Alexandria, in which he calculated the time system of the Calendar according to the moving of the sun. Caesar wanted to change the first day of the year to January 1st, which he thought the most plausible since it would suit solstices and equinoxes. September, October, November, and December were changed to July, August, September, and October.

2. How the New Year celebration was adapted

The Julian calendar was adopted in Venice (Italy) in 1522, in Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Southern European Christians in 1556, in Prussian Empire, Denmark, Sweden in 1559, and in France in 1564. By 1582, the Julian calendar lost its position when Pope Gregory XII shortly used the modern Calendar method to divide the May after his inauguration.

The Pope amended and designated the first day of the new year (New Year) to be January 1st, despite opposition from many Christian associations. In the revised calendar titled “Gregorian Calendar”, 10 days in October were omitted. Thus, October 4, 1582, turned to October 15, 1582, and continues. In this way, the Pope erased the 11 days in the 1700s so that the early years of 1700, 1800, and 1900 would not be the year of need but in 2000 the turn of the new millennium. Catholic countries receive the “New Year” day in the Gregorian calendar at the earliest. Protestants (northern Europe), the Netherlands in 1583; Scotland in 1600; then Protestant countries and Germany accepted “New Year” in 1700, Russia in 1725; Great Britain, England, America, Canada in 1752 and Sweden in 1753.

Today, January 1 is almost recognized as the time to mark the beginning of the new year in many countries around the world. In the first moments of the New Year, in many places, fireworks are lit up in the sky, everyone toast to celebrate a happy, peaceful, and lucky year.
